Essay contest about veterans underway at Hamden Middle School; winner rides in annual state parade

As they embark on writing submissions for the Connecticut Veteran’s Parade essay contest, Hamden Middle School students got some valuable information from those with first-hand experience on what it means to be a veteran.

Several Hamden veterans visited two classes at school Wednesday afternoon to talk to the students about their military experiences, in order to help students write the essays that will be submitted to the contest, the winner of which will ride in the parade in Hartford on Nov. 6. The topic for this year’s contest is “What it means to be a veteran.”

“The main thing is defending our country,” veteran Lou Matteo told the students. “That is what it is all about.”
