Police Officers Learn How to Respond to Calls of Distraught Veterans

When it comes to responding to a call of a distraught veteran, there’s a lot police officers need to know, as without the right training, the situation can quickly escalate.

Veterans with PTSD often experience flashbacks. It is an issue that police officers are learning about as part of a new statewide program. The program puts officers through interactive scenarios with actual combat veterans.

The roleplay teaches officers how to de-escalate situations. Experts say one of the ways to do so is to respect the veteran’s space.  Christopher Araujo, a veteran and the coordinator of the Military Veteran Peer Network for Austin/Travis County, said that it is important officers make sure they don’t feel trapped .
