The commission mailed out 27,000 postcards with information about the agency to individuals who identified themselves as military veterans on Bureau of Motor Vehicle records. The purpose of the mailer was to let veterans know about all the services the BCVSC provides and that the agency is not an affiliate of the Veterans Administration, but rather a conduit for helping them wade through bureaucratic red tape and get benefits.

Executive Director Caroline Bier said the response to the postcards, which hit mailboxes in September, has been phenomenal. Her office, so far, has received more than 200 calls and scheduled 155 appointments. Right now, the agency is scheduling out appointments through December.

“If we see they are continuing to book four to six weeks into the future for appointments, if that goes on six months to a year, that’s the time I’m going to have to go back to the board and possibly look at adding another staff member,” Bier said. “We don’t want to get to the point where it’s ‘come see us, but we can’t handle you.’”
