Assemblyman Vince Mazzeo shot back Tuesday at a campaign advertisement claiming that he discriminated against a military veteran seeking a police promotion during his tenure as mayor of Northfield.

“This idea that I’m against veterans really goes to my heart and I don’t appreciate it,” said Mazzeo, a Democrat, who was flanked by about 40 veterans during an event Tuesday morning in Northfield. “Not because I’m running for Assembly, but because it’s something that I believe in. I believe in our veterans. I believe in the military.”

Mazzeo and Atlantic County Freeholder Colin Bell are running against Republican Assemblyman Chris Brown and Atlantic County Freeholder Will Pauls for the two two-year assembly seats.

The event was in response to campaign literature and a television ad claiming Mazzeo unfairly discriminated against hire vetsa combat veteran seeking a police promotion when his military services required him to return to active duty. The ads were paid for by the Friends of Chris Brown for Assembly.
