Cobb County Superior Court Judge Reuben Green on Aug. 14 visited the Atlanta Veterans Administration’s homeless program at Fort McPherson to assist men and women who have served in the armed forces.

“Unfortunately, a huge population of veterans are homeless,” said Green, a Marine veteran and judge of Cobb’s Veterans Court.

Veterans also have much higher rates of suicide, substance abuse and mental health issues, Green said.

His court is working with 21 veterans who have been charged with nonviolent misdemeanor crimes such as drug or alcohol violations. They can avoid incarceration if they successfully complete the program, which takes a minimum of 18 months.hire vets

Green started the court in June 2014. About half of the current group have a dual diagnosis of addiction and mental illness, said Green.
