A three-story housing complex rising up on a vacant city lot will provide permanent refuge for homeless military veterans.

The 44-unit, $10.1 million Northwest Indiana Veterans Village is on target to open at the end of June at 839 Massachusetts St., said Vernita Leslie, executive director of the Broadway Area Community Development Corp. Leslie said they will begin to take housing applications within the next few weeks.

“Our job is to work with them and get them the skills they need,” said Leslie. “When they’re ready, they can move out, if they want. But it’s permanent supportive housing. They can stay as long as they want.”hire vets

Recent homeless counts completed by the Continuum of Care Network of Northwest Indiana identified nearly 70 homeless veterans in Gary, Hammond and East Chicago.
