New Veterans Service Commission boss aims to add joy to tough job

Somewhere on I-71 between Cincinnati and Fort Knox, Ky., anxiety almost overtook Ohio Army National Guard Col. Chip Tansill.

Generations of men in his family had served in the military, and Army life was all he had known as an adult. Yet there he was heading south, only a couple of hours away from putting his signature on the paperwork that would signal to the government: Thanks for the ride, but I’m done.

His official retirement ceremony after nearly 33 years of service will take place on May 1, which also is his 50th birthday. But he has already moved on to the next phase, having served a month as director of the Franklin County hire vetsVeterans Service Commission.

It’s a job that his new bosses say he has quickly embraced, with an eye toward better service for veterans.
