Franklin County Coroner Says Columbus VA ‘Disrespecting’ Veterans

For civilians, getting a doctor to sign off on a death certificate can often be accomplished in a matter of hours ā€“ so the family can move on to making burial plans.

But when it comes to our local veterans, thatā€™s not always the case.

The Franklin County Coroner says the staff at the Chalmers P. Wylie VA Ambulatory Care Center is taking far too long in too many cases, and she’s speaking out.

“The facility here in Central Ohio does not have a physician on call,ā€ said Franklin County Coroner Dr. Anahi Ortiz.

Dr. Ortiz told 10 Investigates of the most recent example: On February 14, a veteran was brought to the Franklin County Morgue. Repeated calls to the Columbus VA Clinic went unanswered through the Presidents Day weekend. A VA Doctor called back the following Wednesday. On Thursday, hire vetsthe VA arranged for the veteran’s body to be taken to a funeral home.

The wait time was five days which is longer than some faiths require for burial.
