* Forced budget cuts wont take money from the Department of Veterans Affairs. But would hurt veterans in other ways.

Some 350,000 vets work for the VA. They would be part of any government furlough plan should sequestration kick in March 1

* The bugaboo of the VA claims backlog just won’t go away.

Despite resources thrown at the problem, claims pending for more than three months sits above 600,000 cases. Higher than a year ago. The average claim now takes 9 months to finish.

The VA processed 4.1 million claims in the last four years. But took in 4.6 million.

* The Pentagon’s probe of Gen. John Allen wont be made public. The former commander in Afghanistan was investigated concerning his relationship with a Tampa socialite. Media requests for the results were denied. Allen was cleared in the case.


* Florida congressman Tom Rooney has joined veterans groups in asking the DOD to not rank the new Distinguished Warfare Medal above the Purple Heart and Bronze Star in order of merit.
