* Murderous attacks on NATO troops by Afghan security forces that hit an all-time high last year have largely subsided.
Those attacks killed 62 people in 2012. This year so-called insider attacks have killed one coalition soldier.
* A record number of provisions in this yearâs National Defense Authorization Act are aimed at beating back sexual violence in the ranks. The Pentagon estimates that 19,000 attacks happen each year.
One of the biggest changes: The creation of an independent review panel. The move breaks ground by allowing civilian judicial review of the Uniform Code of Military Justice.
* Dead mice laced with painkillers will be dropped on Guamâs jungles to kill brown tree snakes that have practically overrun the tiny island. Thousands of U.S. forces are based there.
