New York, NY  – The Intrepid Museum will honor General Dynamics with the Intrepid Salute Award at its 2022 Salute to Freedom Gala, held Thursday, May 26, at the Museum, located at Pier 86 (46th Street and 12th Avenue) in Manhattan. The Salute Award is given annually in recognition of significant business achievements and support of important philanthropic activities.

Robert Smith, executive vice president for marine systems will accept the award on behalf of General Dynamics.

General Dynamics has proven itself to be a leader in corporate social responsibility on both the personal and corporate levels. It invests in and promotes involvement at the local level to make communities better through groundbreaking initiatives that focus on improving education and social services; promoting health, arts, and culture; supporting policies to strengthen national security; and assisting those in need. Additionally, through the generous sponsorship of nonprofit organizations like Sentinels of Freedom and the Semper Fi & America’s Fund, among many others, General Dynamics shares the Museum’s commitment to supporting veterans and military families.

The Intrepid Museum’s Salute to Freedom gala recognizes the extraordinary leadership and honors the brave men and women who serve in defense of our nation.

Actor and philanthropist Denzel Washington will receive the 2022 Intrepid Lifetime Achievement Award, which honors individuals who demonstrate pioneering achievements in his or her career or field of endeavor, a lifetime of distinguished service furthering our nation, and a long-term commitment to supporting others.


Support from the gala makes possible educational experiences for more than 50,000 students each year, dynamic STEM content, free programs for veterans and military families, exhibitions that present stories of bravery and innovation, and the preservation of the historic artifacts and collections in the Museum’s care.

Rob is responsible for General Dynamics’ three businesses that build and maintain surface ships and nuclear-powered submarines for the U.S.Navy: Electric Boat in Groton, Connecticut, Bath Iron Works in Bath, Maine, and NASSCO in San Diego, California. He joined the company in 1989 and has served in a variety of roles throughout the company.

A native of DeLand, Florida, Rob graduated from Clemson University with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, and from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with an MBA in Finance. He and his family live in northern Virginia where Rob currently serves on the board of directors for Easterseals DC MD VA.
