Take a look at our guide and get to know the voices of the famous horse racing commentators who are the voices behind the races from the past and present.

John McCririck

We simply couldn’t make a list of famous horse racing commentators without including this iconic legend of the sport. McCririck was synonymous with the sport of horse racing for so long and will forever be regarded as one of its legends. Who can forget his breathless commentary on Channel 4 racing, or the appearances he made on popular game shows like Bullseye and reality shows like Celebrity Big Brother. McCririck did a great deal to promote the sport that he knew and loved, and it is due to him that so many people enjoy horse racing today. Many people do not know that McCririck actually started his working life as a journalist, an endeavour for which he twice received a British Press Award. A true legend and promoter of the sport, McCririck is, to many, the one and only voice of horse racing.

Clare Balding

In 1997 Balding became the BBC’s lead horse racing presenter. Her outspoken ways and the fact that she never shies away from asking the questions that we really want the answers to, made her an instant hit with fans of the races. She comes from a family of racing fanatics, and both her dad and brother have trained successful horses. Balding has a quick wit and extensive knowledge of horses and horse racing and this means that she is always welcomed as a pundit on shows. She has appeared on many game shows as well as being given the honor of fronting the coverage of big events like Crufts and the Olympic Games. She has become not only a voice of horse racing, but also a voice of sport in general.

Francesca Cumani

Cumani is much loved in the horse racing world and she currently works for ITV Racing. She comes from a family of trainers and breeders, and her knowledge about horses is extensive. She has presented and commented on racing in Australia and America and has a global following. And it is not just at the side of the course where she likes to show her talent – Cumani received her ametuer jockey licence at the age of just 18, and currently has four wins to her name.

Peter Bromley

As the voice of horse racing commentating on BBC Radio for over 40 years, Bromley is a national treasure in both the world of racing and broadcasting. With instantly recognisable tones, a jolly personality and a winning smile, Bromley is the sound of the races to more than one generation. Born in Cheshire, and a keen rider himself, Bromley is a true lover of all things racing and horse related.
