New Dallas court helps veterans piece their lives together — and resolve their tickets

Odis Garmon ambled his way out of the city’s new community court for veterans with a little pep in his cane-enabled step.

The 58-year-old Army veteran is now five months sober after 30 years of dependency on alcohol and crack cocaine. Now, the city is wiping away $622 worth of municipal warrants — a financial burden on his fixed income — in exchange for some community service.

“It’s a new beginning,” Garmon said.

Dallas city attorneys hope the court will help veterans like Garmon escape the price and pressure of municipal warrants and fines. But the court’s primary mission is to help wayward veterans get their lives back on track.
