Local VA employees, veterans protest proposals to privatize care

Olin E. Teague Veterans’ Medical Center employees and veterans staged an informational picket Thursday in Temple to protest proposals to shutter VA facilities and shift care of millions of veterans to the private sector.

The issue came to the forefront in March after seven members of the 15-member Commission on Care floated a proposal that called for closing VA facilities and shifting care of veterans to the private sector.

The proposal called for using a process similar to the military’s Base Realignment and Closure system or BRAC, which the Pentagon has used to determine base closures and troop realignments.

Eight major veterans’ group including the DAV and the American Legion blasted the proposal in a letter signed by the senior leaders of the organization.
