The American Legion will begin a campaign Monday to stop an effort in Congress to limit the advantage veterans have in federal hiring, starting with a letter to members of the House that accuses the Pentagon of conjuring a “morally-bankrupt tactic” to circumvent veterans’ preference.

The influential veterans group, the country’s largest service organization, said Defense Department officials have hire vets“turned their backs” on veterans who served the Pentagon and the country.

“The myth surrounding Veterans Preference must be dispelled; veterans preference is not a handout,” says the letter signed by American Legion National Commander Dale Barnett. The Washington Post obtained a copy.
