New Hotline System Provides Faster Assistance to Veterans

Veterans who call Veterans Affairs for help with suicidal thoughts will soon be able to get help by pressing the number “7.”

Right now, the automated system at the VA tells veterans to either call 9-1-1 for a mental or medical emergency, or a 1-800 number for suicide help.

“A lot of veterans are frustrated, they’re impatient, they have those thoughts, you know, of harming themselves or like i said, another person,” says Rick Sciapiti, Commander of American Legion Post 16 in Roseburg. “It’s on their mind and they don’t want to deal with barriers.”

Officials say the VA understands that, which is why they’re trying to speed up the process of helping veterans in crisis.
