An Oakland County business which offers home health care services to veterans is in the crosshairs of the state attorney general’s office.

Investigators obtained civil investigative subpoenas last week in Oakland Circuit Court to take depositions from current and former employees of Veterans Home Care of Michigan in Southfield and three affiliated subcontractors after receiving what they call “disturbing” complaints and “troubling questions” from consumers about how the four conduct business.

Allegations include misrepresentations and charges to elderly and disabled veterans and families for services often provided free of charge by taxpayer-funded veterans’ services offices.

Court documents indicate Attorney General Bill Schuette also wants to review documents, including case files, from the past two years from Veterans Home Care of Michigan; Veterans Home Care and VetAssist Program as well as from subcontractors, Unlimited Home Care MI LLC of Detroit; Compassionate Home Health Care Inc. of Milford; and Great Lakes Wellness and Home Help, Inc. of Eastpointe.hire vets

Consumer complaints on file with Schuette’s office include allegations that Veterans Home Care — which is not accredited by the VA to help veterans with benefits claims — has violated provisions of the Michigan Consumer Protection Act.

“While I cannot comment on matters related to an ongoing investigation, the attorney general is on the side of Michigan veterans and wants to ensure that they receive the care and services they need,” said Andrea Bitely, a spokeswoman for Schuette’s office.
