Former congressman says veterans benefits need improvements

Of the contending presidential candidates, former Congressman Bill Owens believes Bernie Sanders has the best record in helping veterans.

“He sponsored a lot of legislation for veterans even before he decided to run for president,” Owens said at a recent talk on veterans services at SUNY Plattsburgh. “On that criteria alone, he would be an excellent president.”

But would Sanders be enough to improve services that military veterans receive, and does Congress have the appetite to get it done? “The truth of the matter is, it (appetite) is very small,” Owens told an intimate gathering at Krinovitz Recital Hall.

Owens, a Plattsburgh attorney, served in Congress in the 21st District from 2009 to 2014.

The Democrat came to the North Country in 1977 as a captain in the Air Force, stationed at Plattsburgh Air Force Base.

He stayed in the area and practiced law for more than 30 years before striking out on a political path.


He ran for Congress in a special election in 2009 to fill the final year on John McHugh’s term. McHugh was named secretary of the army by President Barack Obama.
