The Oakland County Board of Commissioners could soon approve a measure intended to eliminate the fee charged to military veterans to produce a county-issued identification card.

Since 2012, the county has been charging $10 to produce ID cards for veterans.

The Michigan Secretary of State began offering a veteran designation on state-issued ID cards at no cost in 2014.

Since that time, the number of county veterans IDs produced has dropped from more than 1,900 to just over 500 last year.

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs plans to begin issuing the cards next year, officials hire vetsnoted.

The cost to produce the ID cards is negligible and the equipment used in the process is also used to manufacture concealed carry license permits.
