Veterans advocates testify at hearing

The WZZM Watchdog team continues to ask questions about the scathing audit at the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans.

Thursday saw dramatic testimony before the House and Senate Oversight and Ethics Committee in Lansing.

“Strangely, there is no oversight on the issue, making it easy to abuse or kill a veteran and get away with it,” Catherine Kooyers told the panel. Kooyers has been advocating for the veterans for several years. She described how a member at the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans was near death and went against policy. He asked a family hire vetsmember to take him to the hospital. Once he got there, Kooyer said, “They found out what he was trying to mumble. He was overdosed by the staff. They did checks and that’s what happened to him.”

In 2015, the Auditor General’s report revealed quality-of-care issues like not administering pharmaceuticals correctly and abuse and neglect cases not being taken seriously. The report also revealed the home was understaffed 81 percent of the time.
