State inmates working with employees at the Veterans Administration hospital in Battle Creek used patient and prisoner information to collect more than $22 million in bogus tax refunds, a federal indictment charges.

At least 4,668 fraudulent federal income tax refunds were filed over an eight-year period, according to an indictment unsealed this week in U.S. District Court in Grand Rapids.

Defendants ranging in age from 21 to 74 are charged with conspiracy to defraud the United States, which is punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

Although the number of bogus refunds top 4,600, federal prosecutors filed charges in hire vetsabout a dozen instances in which VA patients and inmate information was fraudulently used.

ā€œMy office will bring to justice those willing to misuse other peopleā€™s identification information, often victimizing them, in order to steal money from the government,ā€ U.S. Attorney Patrick Miles said in a news release.
