A national student veterans group has named Syracuse University Chancellor Kent Syverud as the first recipient of an award for championing vets in higher education.

The award is named after another SU chancellor known for his work for veterans, William Tolley.

Student Veterans of America presented Syverud with the inaugural William Pearson Tolley Champion for Veterans in Higher Education Award on Saturday.

SVA, a nonprofit coalition of more than 1,200 student veteran organizations at colleges and universities across the U.S., presented the award to Syverud at the group’s national conference in Florida.hire vets

“Chancellor Syverud is a tireless advocate for student veterans, and has been setting an example for universities across the United States to increase their efforts in serving our nation’s veterans,” said Jared Lyon, SVA’s president and CEO, and a graduate of SU.
