Lane County veterans like soon to open Veterans Affair medical clinic

Local veterans were invited to peek inside the new Veterans Affairs medical clinic in northeast Eugene on Friday, and many said they liked what they saw.

During their tour, veterans took in the lobby’s fireplace; the coffee bar near the pharmacy; new equipment, still in its wrapping, in medical exam rooms and dental operatories; and colorful photos of Oregon’s mountains, lakes, coast and flowers mounted on walls throughout the center.

Many said they were impressed by the spacious, light-filled facility on Chad Drive that will offer more medical services closer to home.

“Absolutely beautiful,” said Phil Duryea, who retired from the Coast Guard in 2005 after 25 years of service. “It’s really good to see a new facility for the veterans to come to.”

The two-story, 126,000-square-foot center is set to open Jan. 25. A grand opening will take place in the morning, then, without missing a beat, the clinic staff will start seeing patients that afternoon, Administrative Services Manager Cynthia Johnson said.

Thousands of local veterans have been eagerly awaiting the opening of the center, which will offer a broader array of services than the existing clinic in north Eugene’s River Road area.
