An all-night vigil on Christmas Eve will memorialize the 22 veterans who die by suicide each day in the United States.

The newly formed local New York/Penn Valley Veterans for Peace chapter cites a study by the Veterans Administration that the suicide rate among veterans is 50 percent greater than the general population, and female veterans are six times more likely to commit suicide. Those statistics prompted the group to bring light to suicide among veterans.

The group will hold its “Peace on Earth, Goodwill to All” vigil from 6 p.m. Dec. 24 to 7 a.m. Dec. 25 at the Muldoon Park gazebo in Waverly, located at Pennsylvania Avenue and Park Place.hire vets

“Given that this is the night that many herald the arrival of the Prince of Peace, we thought it important to make the symbolic gesture of maintaining a watch and practice of peace on earth for the Christmas holiday and beyond,” vigil co-organizer Tom Palumbo stated in a news release.
