The Central New York Veterans Outreach Center is hoping the second time will be the charm.

Center officials recently found out they did not receive $2.1 million from the state Office of Temporary and Disability Assistanceā€™s Homeless Housing and Assistance Program to convert the third and fourth floors of the former YMCA building at 726 Washington St. into 19 housing units for homeless veterans and their families.

ā€œWeā€™re not giving up,ā€ said Vincent Scalise, the centerā€™s executive director and founder. ā€œWe do have a couple other options that weā€™re working on as well, a couple other grants that weā€™re putting together this month (for) more funding for the project.ā€

Scalise said the state will provide technical assistance and will tell the center what ā€œthe shortcomings of the hire vetsapplication were and then weā€™ll have time to correct them and then resubmit.ā€

ā€œWeā€™re going to go back to the drawing board and correct what the state felt was wrong and resubmit as fast as (we) can.ā€
