Las Cruces native Margaret Prado, who served tours of duty in Iraq and Kosovo, walked leisurely Wednesday through Veterans Memorial Park, on Roadrunner Parkway.

“It’s changed, it’s nicer than when I was last here, about five years ago,” said Prado, who now lives in Riverside, Calif., of the park. “The Vietnam monument is very well done, and I’m excited they’re going to add a monument for women veterans.”

A $406,400 appropriation from the 2014 New Mexico Legislature is going to pay for the design and construction of a new memorial honoring women veterans. The monument will recognize women who served honorably in the U.S. military. A monument specifically for women veterans will be the first of its kind in New Mexico, according to city officials.

“Until just a few years ago, when the U.S. finally allowed women to serve in combat, their contributions to our hire vetscountry’s defense weren’t really recognized,” Prado said. “But they were still there, near the front lines, during World War II, Korea, Vietnam, virtually all of America’s military confrontations. Women who have also made the commitment to defend and protect their country are deserving of recognition, too. I’m proud and excited that Las Cruces is acknowledging that with a monument for them.”
