Former Mich. lawmaker uses D.C. trip to lobby for veterans health care

Former U.S. Rep. Kerry Bentivolio has made his share of trips from his Michigan home to Washington, but this one is different.

Bentivolio is walking and biking about 570 miles from his small town of Milford, northwest of Detroit, to the nation’s capital to raise awareness of the need for better health care for veterans.

“When my butt gets sore, I walk. When my feet get sore, I ride,” said Bentivolio, 64, who passed through Westmoreland County on Tuesday, traveling along Route 30. He’s stopping at Veterans of Foreign Wars halls and American Legion posts, talking with fellow veterans and imploring them to contact their representatives and senators about improving the Veterans Affairs health system.

“I hope to get everybody who cares about veterans to call their lawmakers and demand they hire vetsmake our veterans priority No.1,” said Bentivolio. “When you get sent overseas … you’re there for a mission, and that mission is No. 1.”
