Officials are increasing their efforts to try to locate homeless veterans who can be accommodated at the NWI Veterans Village currently under construction at 839 Massachusetts St.

Ground was broken for the three-story facility in November 2013 and it was initially expected to open by January of this year, but delays caused by weather and changes made in connection with the facility’s construction have pushed back the completion date to Sept. 15, according to Vernita Leslie, executive director of the Broadway Area Community Development Corp.

The organization has joined with the city of Gary, NWI Continuum of Care, Jessie Brown VA, Veterans Life Changing Service, Trillium Properties LLC, and the Corporation for Supportive Housing (CSH) Initiative on the project.

The estimated $10.1 million facility is designed to have 44 one-bedroom apartments, with four units being handicapped accessible. Other amenities planned for the facility include a library, computer room, exercise room, community room, commercial kitchen, a roof patio, a walking trail, picnic area and nine administrative offices. Funding is being provided by tax credits issued by the Indiana hire vetsHousing and Community Development Authority (HCDA), the city of Gary, Community Development Block Grant funds, and other sources.
