Writing workshop facilitator Kent Walker ran into class seconds before the scheduled 10:30 a.m. start. He looked like an English teacher with a satchel slung over his shoulder. He wore glasses and has a mustache.

But he shares a similar experience with students. Like him, most in the room are veterans. A few are family members of those who’ve served.

The class sat at attention; Walker, at ease. Then, dialogue began. “Mr. Walker,” a woman many years his senior said. “I have to leave at 1 p.m. Is that OK?”

“That’s fine,” Walker replied. Unlike in the military, the class tolerates desertion.

Along with three other teachers, Walker enlisted with the St. Louis Public Library for a threehire vets-month course teaching a veterans writing workshop. Each week, a small group gathers in a glass-enclosed meeting room to work on writing. Classes are free and last about four hours.
