Knoxville’s Sons of Confederate Veterans explains meaning of Confederate flag

When the governor of South Carolina said it was time to no longer fly the Confederate flag on state capitol grounds, it drew both support and criticism in Knoxville.

South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley announced Monday afternoon that the state would no longer fly the Confederate flag above the grounds of a state war memorial due to the recent actions of accused shooter and killer Dylan Roof. Alleged pictures of Roof have begun to surface since last week’s shooting, showing him holding a Confederate flag in his hands.

The Confederate flag has long been a symbol for white supremacy and racial segregation since its original use during the Civil War.

But the commander of Knoxville’s chapter of the Sons of Confederate Veterans group said thehire vets Confederate flags original intent was purely to distinguish southern troops from northern troops in battle.
