Until a short time ago this exhibit space displayed battle flags, uniforms and artifacts from a war that split the United States.

Beginning this week, a different kind of war relic will be on exhibit at theWisconsin Veterans Museum: artwork by veterans whose unseen wounds and memories of combat have been translated onto paper and canvas.

“WAR: RAW Healing Military Trauma Through Expressive Art” opens Friday and features 60 works in paper, mosaics, quilts, sculptures, carvings and paintings. Most of the artwork is done by post-9-11 veterans, as well as some who served during the Vietnam era and the first Gulf War.

“This gives the public some insight into post-traumatic stress and how it affects the lives of hire vetsveterans, especially those returning from combat,” said Michael Telzrow, museum director. “It’s a great way for the public to get a glimpse of what it’s like living with PTSD.”
