What happens when you put an Army Captain in a room with a few ship Captains?

On Tuesday, May 12 at 8 PM ET/PT, Deadliest Catch: The Bait, which is the DEADLIEST CATCH pre-show, will not only give an inside look at the episode ahead from the captains – where they’ll talk fishing, drama and what to expect on that night’s episode of DEADLIEST CATCH – but they will be highlighting the conversations that took place between the captains of the Bering Sea vessels and Captain Joshua Rodriguez of the United States Army.

When you put a soldier in a room with several sailors, you know it’s going to get exciting. And in full disclosure, I am writing this from a bit of a bias – after all, I not only served in the US Navy but come from a long lineage of sailors.

So let me digress for a moment. For most of you, you know there is a long-standing rivalry between the United States Army and the world’s greatest Navy. Much like an “older brother, younger brother” rivalry. Lots of love, but definitely competitive. The United States Army, founded in June 1775, is the largest branch of the Armed Forces of the United States that performs land-based military operations – these are typically very patriotic individuals who just couldn’t pass the swim test; the United States Navy, founded in October 1775, is…well…the world’s greatest Navy – made up of individuals who are not only patriotic but can walk and also swim. You can see where “older brother” might get a bit envious.

This holds true in most cases – except when the captains of the Bering Sea vessels (granted, not US Navy, but definitely held high regard for taking on the Bering Sea) meet up with US Army Captain Joshua Rodriguez (whose wife happens to be the daughter of a Navy family), these sailors show Captain Rodriguez much deserved respect – as they should.

CPT Rodriguez’s awards and decorations include the Bronze Star for Valor, Bronze Star for Service (with OLC), the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal (with OLC), the Army Achievement Medal, the Afghan Campaign Medal (with 2x Campaign Stars), Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, NATO ISAF Medal, the German Armed Forces Badge for Military Proficiency, and the Combat Action Badge.

He is the real deal. And like most mature leaders, he reciprocates his respect for the sea captains in a very moving way.

Those of you who are fans of DEADLIEST CATCH, and those of you who are looking for a real-life, high seas adventure escape from the comfort of your living room, be sure to check out this Deadliest Catch: The Bait segment on Tuesday, May 12 8 PM ET/PT.   You’ll discover in this episode what most of us, regardless of the color of uniform we wear, have for those who live on the edge: Respect.
