Thousands of veterans impacted by program egibility changes

The Department of Veterans Affairs determines a veteran’s eligibility for the program based on the distance between their home and the nearest VA medical facility.

Now, the Department of Veterans Affairs is changing the way it measures the distance from a veteran’s home to a medical facility by driving distance, rather than straight-line distance. Officials say the change makes about 3,000 more veterans qualified to receive program benefits.

Deborah Amdur, Director of the White River Junction VA Medical Center, said in Vermont, a veteran must live at least 40 miles from the VA Medical Center in White River Junction or one of the 5 VA clinics located in Brattleboro, Burlington, Bennington, Rutland, and Newport. Veterans who live in New Hampshire must live at least 20 miles from the White River Junction VA Medical Center, since there is no full-hire vetsservice VA facility in the Granite State.

Camille Olmstead, Director of the White River Junction VA business office, said the hospital has sent letters to newly-qualified veterans.
