Shelter Insurance Cos. announced Thursday a $450,000 donation to finance the first phase of the Community for Veterans homeless shelter project.

Rick Means, CEO of Shelter Insurance, said the donation was the largest the 68-year-old company has ever given at one time to any group.

Leaders of the Community for Veterans project still need to raise about $3.5 million for the $8 million shelter. The Community for Veterans site will be located on 4.2 acres at 2112 Business Loop 70 E., the site of the old Deluxe Inn.

Welcome Home, the Columbia Housing Authority and Truman Memorial Veterans’ Hospital are collaborating to hire vetsdevelop the facility.

“We’re proud to be a part of this project,” Means said. “We want to do all we can to help the community.”
