Labor secretary lauds veterans program

Labor Secretary Thomas Perez was in San Diego on Tuesday to get a firsthand look at a program credited with helping more than 200 veterans transition from homelessness to employment over the past two years.

“This is a super program,” Perez said after meeting clients and administrators from the Homeless Veterans’ Reintegration Program, a federal program run in San Diego by People Assisting the Homeless, commonly referred to as PATH.

“PATH is not only helping people escape homelessness, but helping people punch their ticket to the middle class,” said Perez, chair of the United States Interagency Council on Homelessness.

Last year, the Department of Labor awarded $36.7 million to 156 organizations nationwide tohire vets provide more than 12,000 veterans with career training under the department’s Homeless Veterans’ Reintegration Program.
