A Central Texas veteran credits the KVUE Defenders for likely saving his life after the Veterans Administration delayed his treatment.
The VA created the Veterans Choice Program to help reduce delays by scheduling appointments with private facilities when the VA couldn’t provide treatment in a timely manner. The KVUE Defenders uncovered veterans still facing problems.
To qualify, veterans must live more a 40-mile driving distance from a VA facility or are unable to schedule an appointment within 30 days.
Henry Taylor signed up for the program a few months ago after he said the VA wouldn’t schedule a MRI to identify 
severe shoulder pain. He served in the U.S. Army and Army Reserve for five years.
“That very intense tear-bringing pain you would from hitting your elbow, that’s what I ended up having 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” said Taylor.
