For some veterans, finding work is a battle

John Lowe grew up in a military family in West Tennessee. His grandfather, who raised him, served in World War II and Korea. Lowe always wanted to serve his country, but said he had a child when he graduated high school and didn’t feel the time was right to join the armed forces.

After high school, he worked full-time as a machinist. Fifteen years later, he was married to his wife, Hollie, had a steady job and three children — a girl and two boys. In 2008, at the age of 33, he enlisted in the Army.

Lowe, now 40, said people thought he was crazy to enlist in the Army at that stage in life. But he said it was something he felt called to do.hire vets

Lowe was honorably discharged from the Army in December 2011. He lived and worked in the Nashville area before moving to Milan last year to be near family. He began what turned into a five-month search for a job that would support his family.
