Service to School is a 501c(3) non-profit that provides free mentorship and assistance to Veterans returning to school. While it is not a VA educational program, we strive to provide you with as much information about outside partnerships and resources as possible.

Veterans are often outsiders to the college system. Many are unaware of options, and even those who are aware do not know how to prepare a winning application. Take one recent example: a young Sgt. Saamon Legoski, who was considering his options when leaving the military.

He did okay in high school but not well enough to win admission to any great schools. The natural choice for him was to go to community college. After several community college semesters, he considered other options and had nearly settled on finishing his degree at a for-profit institution.

Like many veterans, Sgt. Legoski didn’t know that many for-profit schools take advantage of those who served. Students who attend for-profit institutions are more likely to be unemployed, have higher debt, are more likely to default on that debt, and over an entire career are paid less than those who attend public or non-profit colleges. Fortunately for Saamon, more informed individuals intervened. But had they not, Sgt. Legoski would likely be worse off than he had been before joining the Army. And hire vetshe wouldn’t be at Stanford. He is now a Service to School leader, helping other enlisted veterans gain admission into top undergrad institutions.
