Idaho must expand health care for thousands of veterans

Last November, as we took a day to honor all veterans serving in the United States Armed Forces including the thousands living here in Idaho and those deployed abroad it was also a reminder of how we are failing on an important obligation to these men and women.

As much as we treasure those who have risked their lives in the armed services, why is our state placing the health of so many of them at risk on the home front?

I’m not referring to the ongoing crisis in the VA health services, a federal problem that demands a federal solution. I’m talking about an Idaho decision that leaves thousands of veterans without medical benefits. In fact, Idaho has the second-highest percentage of veterans without health coverage among the states.

Gov. Butch Otter so far has declined to close the coverage gap for veterans in Idaho. As a hire vetsresult, thousands of them and their families – are going without the security of good health care that so many other Idahoans enjoy.
