Three South Florida colleges have received funding that may command better services for students who are veterans.

The Veterans Trust, a non-profit foundation based in Fort Lauderdale, on Friday awarded $25,000 each to Florida Atlantic University, Nova Southeastern University and Broward College to build or enhance their veterans service centers.

The plan is to create one-stop shops for veterans in areas such as financial aid, advising, career planning, tutoring, mental health counseling as well as networking and socializing. Money could also be used for scholarships to bridge the gap if money from the G.I. Bill is late or insufficient.

“Universities and colleges have the best of intentions but don’t have a solid model that works,” said Lee Hediger, founder and chairman of the Veterans Trust.

Broward College doesn’t yet have a veterans center on any of its campuses. FAU and NSU hire vetsboth opened veterans centers in their student unions about a year ago but would use the money to expand their efforts.
