American Legion Commander receives statewide award for helping homeless veterans

Sons of the American Legion Post 377 Cmdr. Huey Chapman was recently presented with an award from the Michigan Veterans Foundation for his dedication to helping the homeless veterans at the Detroit Veterans Center.

Michigan Veterans Foundation Board member and American Legion Post 377 Auxiliary member Ivy Lee Reinhardt presented the award to him from Michigan Veterans Foundation Executive Director Tyrone Chatman at the post.

ā€œA lot of veterans would not have the things they do, if not for Huey,ā€ Reinhardt said. ā€œHis heart and soul is involved in what he does. Heā€™s a wonderful man. There isnā€™t anything that he wouldnā€™t do for a veteran.ā€hire vets

Chapman has volunteered to help the homeless veterans at the center since 2005. Five years ago he founded the annual homeless veteransā€™ picnic given at the post. He organizes it and all the groups at the post pitch in to make it enjoyable for the veterans. Last July 55 veterans attended.
