Cumberland County has finally won funding for a veterans treatment court.

The special court, aimed at keeping veterans with mental health or substance abuse problems in treatment rather than jail, could open as soon as next month.

“We’re hopeful to be in a position to have an opening in October, and I think we should be able to do that without any question,” said chief District Court Judge Beth Keever. “We just haven’t set a date at this time.”

Keever spearheaded the effort to get the court funded. The third grant application was the charm, with two previous attempts having failed in the past three years.

The court will work with troubled veterans charged with nonviolent crimes.

According to census data, Fayetteville ranks fourth in the nation among cities by percentage of veterans, with 22.1 percent of the population being former military personnel.
