CBS: ‘We want to apologize to veterans…’
A week ago, CBS broadcast an episode of āThe Amazing Raceā that used an unwise prop: a B-52 that had been shot down over Vietnam in 1972. The image and its treatment offended veterans groups, not to mention a very vocal Greg Gutfeld and other Fox News hosts.
The network is sorry. This weekās show opened with an apology, offering proof that old school patriotism can be a powerful thing.
āParts of last Sundayās episode, filmed in Vietnam, were insensitive to a group that is very important to us – our nationās veterans,ā said host Phil Keoghan. āWe want to apologize to veterans – particularly those who served in Vietnam – as well as to their families and any viewers who were offended by the broadcast. All of us here have the most profound respect for the men and women who fight for our country.ā
Vietnam War veteran and American Legion National commander James E. Koutz is satisfied.
āAmerica is a forgiving country. When you make a mistake, you own up to it. The American Legion applauds CBS and āThe Amazing Raceā for its apology that was broadcast immediately before tonightās episode. We believe it to be sincere and heartfelt. We would like to thank the hundreds, if not thousands, of people who supported us through their Facebook comments, tweets, e-mails and phone calls,ā Mr. Koutz says. āTo CBS, I say, āapology accepted.āā
Previously, he had compared the show to a World War II broadcast of Tokyo Rose, and wished that CBS would air something more along the lines of Kate Smith singing āGod Bless America.ā
Not a bad idea.
