The anxiety that crept in the night before Darla Grese and Kelli met melted away soon after the two came face to face in a Portsmouth shopping center.

There, Kelli scampered across the concrete floor of Hampton Roads Hounds for Heroes chasing a toy held by Grese’s 8-year-old son Brady. Moments later, a panting Kelli – a mixed-breed hound – curled up next to Grese’s chair. Grese reached down and smoothed her black and white fur.

“This is just perfect,” Grese said. “She couldn’t be more appropriate.”
