Michigan lawmakers frequently refer to military veterans as “our heroes,” but residents of the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans testified they haven’t been treated that way, particularly since state nursing aides at the home were replaced by a lower-priced contractor in 2013.
Veterans testified before a joint hearing of the House Oversight and Veterans Affairs committees that chronic short-staffing of nursing aide positions documented in a February audit continued to be a problem as recently as this 
weekend, despite management changes at the home and approval of higher wages and more contracting help by the state Legislature.
James Redford, a Navy veteran and former Kent County judge who took over on an interim basis after the audit and was named director of the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency in April, said after the hearing that staffing levels are improving but the issue is a “continuing challenge.”
