Veterans get life back through Treatment Court

Monedria Malone remembers sitting at the Jefferson Alcohol and Drug Abuse Center with her two young nieces a few years back.

They told her their fear: that she wouldn’t be around to see them graduate or find love and get married. Those words stuck.

It had been nearly a decade since the U.S. Army veteran returned home from Iraq more than a little traumatized, she hire vetssaid. Drugs and alcohol dulled the memories, eased her anxiety. It also landed her in court more than a dozen times.

But on Tuesday, the 34-year-old stood before a gallery of smiling faces from the Jefferson County criminal justice system as she accepted her diploma from the Veterans Treatment Court. She was all smiles, too.
