While the Mahali Mountains may not be the most famous location in Tanzania, they’ve become increasingly renowned thanks to various studies into the behaviour of wild chimpanzees within the region.

Make no mistake; this research has offered an insight into the fascinating examples of wildlife that reside within the area, while it’s also encouraged people to find out more about the mountains and their unique features.

Further, thousands of adventure-seekers, both young and old, are drawn in by the allure of scaling the landscape so it’s perfect for a safari tour to Tanzania with a little bit more excitement.

In this article, we’ll consider this in further detail while asking why you should visit the Mahali Mountains?

The Site is Home to More than 1,000 Chimpanzees Across Several Communities

While there are numerous Tanzania activities and tour excursions that involve the Mahali Mountains, there’s no doubt that the region’s chimpanzee population remains the single most popular attraction to visitors.

In total, it’s estimated that there are in excess of 1,000 chimpanzees divided across a dozen communities in the mountains, including the habituated Mimikere group of around 60 individual animals.

Not only is the area well populated with this incredible species of animal, but the mountains also rank as one of the top chimpanzee-tracking destinations anywhere on the continent.

This is at least partially down to its size and unique terrain, as it’s some 30-times larger than the nearby Gombe and occupies a mountainous knuckle that juts seamlessly into the iconic Lake Tanganyika.

It’s one of the Most Beautiful National Parks in Africa

Aside from its wildlife and fascinating chimpanzee population, the Mahali Mountains also happen to be part of the most beautiful national parks in Africa (or indeed anywhere in the world) and if you’re a veteran thinking of travelling there’s plenty of exclusive travel discounts you can explore.

Spanning 1,613 sq. kilometres, the mountains are truly beguiling, and have been described by many as being reminiscent of the Gombe Stream (although it’s widely accepted that the Mahali region is far grander and more picturesque).

Dominated topographically by the Mahale Range (which is a stretch of the Rift Valley Escarpment that rises sharply from the shore to the 2,462 sq. metre Nkungwe Peak), it certainly boasts incredible elevation and a diverse range of terrain that makes for outstanding exploration.

In truth, you could spend hours exploring this natural landscape and its ecosystems, even without the presence of exotic wildlife and chimpanzees.

The Lake Views here are Genuinely Amazing

We mentioned earlier that the mountains are based on the shores of Lake Tanganyika, which only adds to the allure of the region.

It certainly provides some stunning views, with the setting arguably reminiscent of a volcanic island beach resort located deep in the Indian Ocean.

This is particularly true when you stand at 2,000 sq. metres in elevation or on one of the mountain’s glorious peaks, where the views of the lake are incredible (particularly during the early morning or evening).

During these times, you may also see a large variety of birds and primates from your viewpoint, creating a wonderful experience and several incredible photo opportunities!

Just don’t forget to pack your camera, as you’d never forgive yourself if you failed to capture the majesty of the mountains and their stunning views.
