Like many students attending the now-defunct ITT Technical Institutes when it closed earlier this month, Byron Sumpter was depending on the school to get a degree and all the economic benefits he hoped would come with it. But he was also relying on the opportunity to stay in school for another reason: a large part of his income was tied to being enrolled.
Sumpter, a member of the National Guard, used the GI Bill to help pay for his classes at ITT. In addition to covering tuition costs, the bill comes with a housing stipend, which Sumpter said he used to get by. But once ITT collapsed, Sumpterās access to the GI Bill benefits was cut off. He canāt tap it again unless he attends another school.
