Military veterans are losing GI Bill benefits because of ITT bankruptcy

Like many students attending the now-defunct ITT Technical Institutes when it closed earlier this month, Byron Sumpter was depending on the school to get a degree and all the economic benefits he hoped would come with it. But he was also relying on the opportunity to stay in school for another reason: a large part of his income was tied to being enrolled.

Sumpter, a member of the National Guard, used the GI Bill to help pay for his classes at ITT. In addition to covering tuition costs, the bill comes with a housing stipend, which Sumpter said he used to get by. But once ITT collapsed, Sumpterā€™s access to the GI Bill benefits was cut off. He canā€™t tap it again unless he attends another school.
