Charleston, South Carolina – Soldiers’ Angels conducted a mobile food pantry today at the Altman Athletic Center at The Citadel located at 69 Hagood Avenue, Charleston, SC 29403.  Over 200 low income veterans and their families were supported. Each family received 50 pounds of food, including fresh fruits and vegetables. The pantry was conducted in partnership with The Citadel and the Low Country Food Bank.

The Mobile Food Pantry is part of the Soldiers’ Angels Hunger Relief Program, an initiative to fight veteran hunger. With 12% of the homeless population in Charleston having served in the military, the need for support is urgent and constantly increasing. After months of building the program at its headquarters in San Antonio, Texas, Soldiers’ angels recently expanded the service to other major cities across the country, including: San Diego, California in June; Denver, Colorado in July; and now Charleston in September. More cities are scheduled to begin the service in coming months.

“Soldiers’ Angels is thrilled to be expanding our Hunger Relief Program to Charleston area veterans and their families,” said Amy Palmer, President and CEO of Soldiers’ Angels. “The program has had an incredible impact on the veterans of the San Antonio area and we look forward to having the same effect in Charleston. These brave men and women have given so much for our country, this is the least we can do for them.”

With the assistance and partnership from The Citadel, Military College of South Carolina, the event in Charleston is unique to other cities as Citadel Cadets will be volunteering at the event to distribute food to the veterans in attendance. In addition, the veterans will be invited to attend the weekly Citadel parade after the completion of the food pantry.

The Veteran Mobile Food Pantry is scheduled to be held monthly in the parking lot of The Citadel for the remainder of the year on the following dates: Wednesday, October 19 and Friday, November 11.
