There are 773,063 veterans of the U.S. military living in New York state — 6.2 percent are female, 6.6 percent are unemployed, 6.6 percent are below the poverty level and 28.7 percent are disabled, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

The Rand Corporation completed a study in 2014, which identified many statistics regarding post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression and traumatic brain injury (TBI) in veterans. Part of its summary included there are 2.7 million American veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. There are 2.6 million Vietnam veterans who fought in Vietnam and 8.2 million Vietnam-era veterans.

The study found that 9 percent of veterans returning from deployment displayed symptoms of PTSD at the time of return.
